Better than an honour / Plus qu’un honneur

“Thank you for your service,” is a meaningful sentiment that is heard by serving members fairly often, but when the thanks takes the form of a quilt, into which hours of work and dedication are poured, it carries a meaning that runs even deeper.

Quilts of Valour- Canada Society was founded in 2006 in Edmonton, AB as a way to acknowledge the significant contributions made by Canadian soldiers through their service to our country. The idea was so well received, that it expanded across Canada, and is now a Registered Charity with Canada Revenue Agency, and is a Federal Not-for-profit Corporation.

Over 7,000 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members have received quilts, and one of the most recent recipients is located here, at CFB Borden.

MCpl Kirk Kreitzer has served in the CAF for 16 years, first in the Royal Canadian Navy, and now at 16 Wing Headquarters with the Royal Canadian Airforce.

Having grown up in Tillbury, ON, it was the Quilts of Valour chapter who meets at the local Legion who created the quilt for Kreitzer.

The quilt was presented in August by Sony Chenette, the Regional Representative for Quilts of Valour Canada.

“I was honoured and moved… well, it was better than an honour,” said Kreitzer, nodding his head.

The label on the quilt includes an identification number, linked to Kreitzer, and reads “Quilts of Valour: Handmade with love, respect and gratitude for your sacrifice to Canada. May the hug stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength and love. We present you this to you Mr. Kreitzer. Thank you for your service.”

May the hug stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength and love. We present you this to you Mr. Kreitzer. Thank you for your service. »
