By/Par: Lt Serap Bulsen, Muslim Chaplain Candidate, SEELM Student | Candidat à l’aumônerie musulman, SEELM

A multi-faith prayer service  was held at Buell Gym on March 2, 2018. The service  was organized and led by  chaplain candidates Captain Jones, Lt Bulsen and 2Lt Khadij with the support of chaplains. The theme of the event was “Calm the Waters” The prayers, meditations, songs, decor,  central display and water marbling  art were well received by the participants of the event.  “I was so impressed and inspired by everything in this service especially by the central display and water marbling art. This was a very unique prayer service,” said Padre Demiray.

Upon arriving at the service, the attendees were given a booklet and they were invited to join or observe the prayers and meditations. The service was delivered in both French and English. The participants enjoyed the flexibility of the service as they were able to stay for a short or long period of time.

The prayers, meditative pieces, songs and stories delivered in this service originated from various faith traditions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Indigenous traditions, Hinduism as well as non-faith based meditative pieces. 2Lt Khadij, who put great effort in organizing and leading  the service with other chaplain candidates said “There is a strong value in assembling together to pray and/or meditate, no matter what our beliefs are. It reminds us that we are all united in our humanity and in our search for the transcendent, peace and happiness.”

Following the service, the attendees provided positive feedback. Captain Jones said, “I think one of the real values of this service was the conversations that it generated. After the service, we had a chance to talk to people about their faith. Some shared personal difficulties they were having and how prayer and meditation was helpful.” Some of  the participants said they felt lighter and  relaxed, others  were also curious to know about the next prayer service.  The organizers shared that they were looking forward to organizing another similar event.

After the service, everyone appreciated the multi-faith giveaways and marbled bookmarks.
