Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) recently held a celebration honouring student excellence among the ranks of both its student volunteers and co-operative education participants.
“At RVH we make it a priority to provide educational and research opportunities for students from high school age to university master’s degree level, nursing students and medical residents,” said Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.
“We’re so committed to this that we opened our very own Centre for Education and Research last year as a place for students and staff to learn and practice together. We want to inspire and motivate young people to be the best they can be. We want young people to be excited about working or volunteering in healthcare. We want our staff to be both teachers and mentors as they share their skills and expertise.”
Twelve students received an outstanding service award, and of those students a panel of judges chose three to receive the MY CARE Student Award of Excellence – the highest student honour at RVH.
The winners of the MY CARE Student Award of Excellence were: Natalee Schors, from Elmvale District High School, in the co-operative education category; Gavin Hughes, Eastview Secondary School, in the high school volunteer category; and Nicole Barcicki, from Lakehead University, in the post-secondary category.
Lise McCourt, president of the RVH Auxiliary, also presented two students with $1,000 scholarships. The first recipient was Faith Bolduc, a student at École secondaire Romeo-Dallaire, who will be attending the University of Ottawa’s Biomedical Science Program in the fall. The second recipient was Gavin Hughes, who has been accepted to the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) Program at Queen’s University. Both students volunteer at RVH and have chosen to pursue a career in healthcare.
“We were thrilled to honour all the students and especially thrilled for Gavin Hughes who took home three awards: Outstanding Service Award; MY CARE Student Award of Excellence and the RVH Auxiliary Scholarship Award,” said Skot. “Gavin’s grandfather, Mayor Harry Hughes of the Township of Oro-Medonte, has a long history with RVH. Mayor Hughes spent 13 years as a member of the RVH board of directors, is currently on the RVH Foundation Board and a great friend to RVH. It was so nice to see that his community-minded spirit has clearly been passed down to his grandson Gavin.”

Le Centre régional de santé Royal Victoria (CRSRV) a récemment tenu une célébration pour souligner l’excellence de ses étudiants bénévoles et ceux qui participent à un programme d’éducation coopérative.
« Offrir des possibilités d’apprentissage et de recherche à nos étudiants du secondaire à la maîtrise, nos étudiants en soins infirmiers ou nos résidents en médecine est une priorité pour nous au CRSRV », a affirmé Janice Skot, présidente et chef de la direction du CRSRV.
« Nous y croyons tellement que nous avons ouvert notre propre Centre d’éducation et de recherche l’an dernier, lequel permet aux étudiants et au personnel d’apprendre et de pratiquer ensemble. Nous voulons inspirer et motiver les jeunes pour qu’ils donnent le meilleur d’eux mêmes. Nous voulons qu’ils soient enthousiastes à l’idée de travailler ou de faire du bénévolat dans le domaine de la santé. Nous voulons que les membres de notre personnel agissent à la fois comme enseignants et comme mentors tandis qu’ils transmettent leurs compétences et leur expertise. »
Douze étudiants ont reçu un prix d’excellence du service. Parmi eux, trois ont été choisis par un jury pour recevoir le prix d’excellence de la relève étudiante MY CARE, soit la plus haute distinction étudiante du CRSRV.
Les lauréats du prix d’excellence de la relève étudiante MY CARE sont : Natalee Schors, de l’école secondaire du district d’Elmvale, dans la catégorie éducation coopérative; Gavin Hughes, de l’école secondaire Eastview, dans la catégorie bénévolat au secondaire, et Nicole Barcicki, de l’Université Lakehead, dans la catégorie postsecondaire.
Lise McCourt, présidente du CRSRV auxiliaire, a également remis des bourses de 1 000 $ à deux étudiants : Faith Bolduc, élève de l’école secondaire Romeo-Dallaire, qui étudiera dans le programme de sciences biomédicales de l’Université d’Ottawa à l’automne, et Gavin Hughes, qui a été admis au baccalauréat en sciences de la santé (avec spécialisation) de l’Université Queen’s. Les deux élèves sont bénévoles au CRSRV et ont choisi de faire carrière dans le domaine de la santé.
« Nous étions ravis d’honorer tous les étudiants et particulièrement pour Gavin Hughes qui a reçu trois prix, soit le prix d’excellence du service, le prix d’excellence de la relève étudiante MY CARE et la bourse d’études du CRSRV auxiliaire », a dit Mme Skot. « Le grand-père de Gavin, le maire Harry Hughes, du canton d’Oro-Medonte, a une longue histoire avec le CRSRV. M. Hughes a été membre du conseil d’administration du CRSRV pendant 13 ans, il siège actuellement au conseil de la Fondation du CRSRV et est un grand ami du CRSRV. Nous sommes ravis de constater que son petit-fils Gavin a hérité de son esprit communautaire. »
