Stuart was born in Ottawa, Ontario, in August of 1931. He attended schools in Quebec and Ontario, graduating from Ryerson University’s School of Business. Stu’s military career started as an instructor with the Air Cadets in 1950 before he was commissioned into the RCAF Primary Reserve Education Branch in 1954, and he attended the School of Instructional Techniques.

Stuart was assigned to the Air Cadet Program, in particular the “151 Chadburn” squadron in Oshawa Ontario, filling all the positions up to and including the Commanding Officer as a Major.

In 1986, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Regional Cadet Officer (Central) and then in 1994, Commanding Officer of the Cadet Training Centre Borden Ontario. In 1996, LCol Beaton decided to retire from the CAF and took on an interim position at the Base Borden Military Museum until September of 1999 when he accepted the position of Director of the Base Borden Military Museum

Amongst Stuart’s many noteworthy awards throughout his astonishing 70 year career, it would be remissive not to highlight the following: The Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service by the Chief of the Defence Staff in 2010 and the Public Service Award of Excellence in the Outstanding Career category in 2017.

Stuart and his wife, Sharron, live near Lisle, Ontario. They have five children and ten grandchildren. Stuart’s plans in retirement are to spend more time with his family, especially at their cottage. Stuart would like to thank his wife Sharron, his children, and the rest of his family for the support and understanding they have given him throughout his entire career. Stu would also like to thank the many soldiers, public service employees, and friends he has had the opportunity to serve with and alongside during his career.
