Energy conservation tips

The continued use of fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil and coal are directly related to the steady increase of carbon dioxide levels in our planet’s atmosphere. It is alarming to note that once again the world’s environmental scientists have informed the masses that our planet is currently warming at a more accelerated pace than it was initially anticipated. The outcome could pose to be very devastating for all, if we do not bring our overall GHG emissions back down to adequate levels.

Many of you are probably asking yourselves what can one individual do, and could it make a difference as GHG emissions from developing countries continue to surge upwards. All it takes is one individual to plant the seed of change by educating those around them on how to live a more energy conscientious and environmentally friendly lifestyle. You do not need to make drastic lifestyle changes in order for you to be able to make a difference in the world. Instead you should try to work on motivating those around you to achieve one common goal that is living in an energy responsible manner.

Below are some energy conservation tips that you can immediately take advantage of to keep the Base electricity consumption low and reduce strain on the electrical grid:

  • If you have a vestibule at the main entrance of your building, please make sure that both sets of doors are closed. This way the air gap that is created by the two sets of doors acts as an insulator.
  • Speak to your colleagues about saving energy! You need to lead by example, but it’s also important to make it a team effort. Many people who are very energy conscious at home forget to follow energy saving practices at work.
  • If possible, keep vents closed in unoccupied areas to prevent unnecessary heating of storage spaces.

Below are some home energy conservation tips that you can immediately take advantage of to conserve energy and keep money in your pockets:

  • Did you know that toaster ovens, crock pots and microwaves use less energy than your oven or range? If applicable try to prepare you meals with the help of one of the above pieces of equipment and you will also reduce your overall energy use.
  • If applicable replace the incandescent bulbs in your home with energy efficient LED’s (light emitting diodes).
  • During the heating season, keep the draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.

Remember: When not in use, turn off the juice.
