Some 80 English and French speaking parishioners gathered on September 15 at Saint Joseph Chapel in Borden for the annual barbecue to welcome newcomers, kick off the new season and recruit new volunteers.
“We always try to make everyone feel welcome. When you do activities like this, it gives people who are new to the community a chance to get together, get to know others and integrate,” said Chaplain Marie-Claire Khadij.
On Sunday morning, the grey sky and rain did not create the most inviting atmosphere for the celebration, but, by 9 a.m., the volunteers were already at work. They peeled corn, cut vegetables and prepared dishes. Umbrella in hand, a cook grilled hamburgers and hot dogs on the barbecue. Even 10 year-old Gabriel Robinson was there, “I like to help,” he said.
The celebrations began with a bilingual mass celebrated by Father Denis Dion. During the mass, a statue of Saint Michael was blessed, “It was Yvon Lalande who donated the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel and it had not yet been officially installed,” said Marie-Claire. “It was a very special occasion,” she said.
The chairman of the board of the John Gribben Chapel was happy to see new faces. Manon Daigle, who is originally from Quebec City, but is now a resident of Alliston, attended the event with her civilian family. “It’s great that we can have masses in English and French,” she said. Captain Nicole McKay and her recently baptized son Cayden were also present, “It’s a wonderful community––very warm, very welcoming,” she said. Cayden, for his part, loves the children’s mass, “I do readings,” he said.
Regular celebrations are held on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in French and at 11:15 a.m. in English. The chapel is also open for people who want to pray from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome!
Quelque 80 paroissiens anglophones et francophones se sont réunis le 15 septembre, à la chapelle Saint-Joseph à Borden, dans le cadre du barbecue annuel visant à accueillir les nouveaux arrivants, lancer la nouvelle année et recruter les nouveaux bénévoles.
« On essaie toujours de faire en sorte que tout le monde se sente le bienvenu. Quand on fait des activités comme ça, ça permet aux gens qui sont nouveaux dans la communauté de se rassembler, d’apprendre à connaître les autres et de s’intégrer », précise l’aumônier Marie-Claire Khadij.
Dimanche matin, le ciel gris et la pluie n’invitaient pas à la célébration. Pourtant, dès 9 h, les bénévoles étaient déjà à l’œuvre. Ils épluchaient les épis de maïs, coupaient les légumes et préparaient les plats. Parapluie à la main, un cuisinier faisait cuire les hamburgers et les hot dogs sur le barbecue. Même le jeune Gabriel Robinson, âgé de 10 ans, était de la partie : « J’aime aider », explique-t-il.
Les célébrations ont commencé par une messe bilingue célébrée par Père Denis Dion. Durant la messe, une statue de Saint-Michel a été bénie : « C’est monsieur Yvon Lalande qui a fait le don de la statue de Saint-Michel archange et on ne l’avait pas encore installée officiellement, précise Marie-Claire. C’était un moment spécial ! »
Le président du conseil de la chapelle John Gribben a trouvé encourageant de voir de nouveaux visages. Originaire de Québec, mais résidente d’Alliston, Manon Daigle elle a participé à l’événement avec sa famille civile. « C’est intéressant qu’on puisse avoir des messes en anglais et en français, explique-t-elle. » Le capitaine Nicole McKay et son fils Cayden, récemment baptisé, étaient également présents : « C’est une super belle communauté, très chaleureuse, très invitante, explique-t-elle. » Cayden aime d’ailleurs la messe des enfants : «Moi je fais des lectures ! précise-t-il.»
Les célébrations régulières ont lieu les dimanches, à 9 h 45 en français et à 11 h 15 en anglais. La chapelle est également ouverte pour les personnes qui veulent prier du lundi au vendredi de 0800 à 1600 hrs. Tous sont bienvenus!
