On 24 June, a ceremony commemorating the Change of Command for 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron took place at Hangar 18, on the Borden aerodrome.
The passing of command, from LCol David Sheink to LCol Lyle Holbrook was presided over by the 1 Wing Commander, Colonel Travis Morehen. A small select group of guests were in attendance, including 400 Squadron CWO Paul Nesbitt, and 1 Wing CWO Lori White. The spouses of those involved were also in attendance while the entire Wing was able to watch by way of a live stream.
LCol Sheink had been the CO since June 2018, and has overseen a tremendous change at the unit. In two years it has refined its role as the lead unit for all Griffon major maintenance inspections, and in particular; receiving and dispatching aircraft for overseas duty in both Iraq and Mali.
Col Morehen thanked LCol Sheink for his leadership of 400 Sqn, and expressed his confidence in LCol Holbrook to continue the high standard of excellence that has been established.
The incoming 400 Sqn Commanding Officer, LCol Holbrook is a career reservist, who has been associated with the unit for nearly 30 years. There is a road of familiarity with the Griffon Squadron as he has risen thru the ranks from Officer Cadet to Lieutenant Colonel, flying Kiowas and Griffons across Canada, the United States and Afghanistan. His last position in the unit was ideal training, as he has been the Deputy Commanding Officer under LCol Sheink for the last two years.
LCol Sheink is retiring from the RCAF and leaving Borden, but his ties to the CAF remain strong as he looks forward to his new role as Registrar of Royal Military College St-Jean.
Passation de commandement au 400e Escadron
Le 24 juin, une cérémonie de passation de commandement du 400e Escadron tactique d’hélicoptères a eu lieu au hangar 18, à l’aérodrome de Borden.
La passation de commandement, du Lcol David Sheink au Lcol Lyle Holbrook, a été présidée par le Col Travis Morehen, commandant de la 1re Escadre. Un petit groupe restreint d’invités était présent, dont l’Adjuc Paul Nesbitt du 400e Escadron et l’Adjuc Lori White de la 1re Escadre. Les conjoints du commandant sortant et du commandant entrant étaient également présents, tandis que les autres membres de l’Escadre ont pu assister à la cérémonie par webdiffusion.
Le Lcol Sheink, commandant de l’Escadron depuis juin 2018, a supervisé un énorme changement au sein de l’unité. En deux ans, le 400e Escadron a défini son rôle à titre d’unité responsable de toutes les inspections d’entretien majeures du Griffon, notamment la réception et l’envoi d’aéronefs destinés au service outremer en Irak et au Mali.
Le Col Morehen a remercié le Lcol Sheink pour son leadership au 400e Escadron, et s’est dit persuadé que le Lcol Holbrook maintiendra les hautes normes d’excellence établies.
Le Lcol Holbrook, nouveau commandant du 400e Escadron, est un réserviste de carrière, et il est associé à l’unité depuis près de 30 ans. Il connaît bien l’escadron du Griffon, puisqu’il a gravi les échelons, d’élève-officier à lieutenant-colonel, et a piloté le Kiowa et le Griffon partout au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Afghanistan. Son dernier poste à l’unité était une affectation idéale, puisqu’il a été le commandant adjoint du Lcol Sheink pendant les deux dernières années.
Le Lcol Sheink prend sa retraite de l’ARC et quitte Borden, mais ses liens avec l’ARC demeurent solides et il se réjouit à l’idée d’assumer les fonctions de registraire du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean.
