Incoming and Outgoing CFFCA CWOs shared remarks before assuming new roles and responsibilities
Marked by heartfelt speeches and expressions of gratitude on 9 May 2024, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden witnessed a significant change of appointment at the Canadian Forces Firefighting Academy (CFFCA) from Chief Warrant Officer Jeremy Buckingham to Chief Warrant Officer Frederick Wightman, highlighting the transitions and the continuity of leadership within the Academy.
During the ceremony, outgoing CWO Buckingham expressed his appreciation for the support he received throughout his tenure.
“The support provided through the fire academy has been incredible,” he said, reflecting on the contributions of his colleagues and the camaraderie that defined his service. He emphasized the importance of leadership, noting that CWO Wightman has the experience, work ethic and tenacity for the role.
“You bring a balanced approach of leadership presence and administrative prowess,” CWO Buckingham said.
CWO Buckingham also extended gratitude to his family, acknowledging their crucial role in his success by highlighting the personal sacrifices and support systems behind his professional achievements.
“To my wife and daughter, thank you for your support, for keeping me on track and ensuring I took care of myself,” he said.
Incoming CWO Wightman expressed his enthusiasm for the role and gratitude towards his predecessor for the mentorship and guidance he received.
“If someone was asking me, what is the most valuable thing someone can give? I would answer time,” said CWO Wightman. “I will endeavor to serve as your unit Chief Warrant Officer with a goal of providing you with a professional, positive experience, influence and mentorship.”
The ceremony also included a prayer led by the Base Chaplain Captain Graham Lawrence, who reminded those present of the significance of transitions.
“We recognize in this moment that times of transition are often filled with both a sense of loss of what has been and a sense of adventure and anticipation for what is ahead,” Capt Lawrence said.
The prayer underscored the community’s hope and confidence in the continued service and dedication of the CFFCA members and the event concluded with the playing of God Save the Queen, allowing attendees to ponder the contributions of both the outgoing and incoming CWOs.
It was a day of mixed emotions—gratitude for past leadership and optimism for the future.
As the new CWO takes on his role, the CFFCA looks forward to a new chapter of excellence and dedication. The Academy remains committed to its mission, driven by the strong leadership and unwavering support of its members and their families.
