The Girls of Hope group have resumed meetings every other Thursday at Base Borden’s St. Joseph Chapel Annex and are welcoming new members (age 6-12).
Their mission is to foster social justice through fundraising activities for food banks, shelters and organizations like Sick Kids. Bi-weekly activities include creating fundraising projects (like painted rocks or birdhouses) and selling them to the local community. The Girls of Hope are given leadership and organizational skills, as they plan the fundraising project from the creation phase to the completion phase. Other activities include garbage cleanups of local parks, and social events like bowling, soccer and barbecues.
“We foster the spirit of social justice from the teachings of friendship and hope from Jesus. To keep this in mind, we begin and close each meeting with the Our Father, or a prayer of personal intentions to help others,” said group leader Cpl Melissa-Anne Lackan.
There is no cost to registration, but parents of those interested in joining are asked to please email Melissa-Anne.Lackan@forces.gc.ca so they can plan their snacks.
The Girls of Hope meet every other Thursday at Base Borden’s St. Joseph Chapel Annex from 1800 – 2000 hrs. In addition to regular meetings, the group gathers sometimes on weekends at CANEX to sell their creations for fundraising.
