All manner of creatures swarmed Base Borden on Saturday, 22 October for the annual Spooky Sprint.

More than 300 people turned up for the event hosted by Borden’s Personnel Support Programs (PSP) team, including nearly 200 for the Kids Creepy K. So many kids in fact that the children’s 1 km race was divided into two heats. Kids were able to trick-or-treat along the route and collect chocolate that was generously donated for the event.

The day kicked off with the Commander’s Challenge 10 km race at 1630 hrs, followed by the Kids Creepy K and finally the Freaky 5K after dark for the braver participants who were up for some scares.

Between races, participants enjoyed Halloween themed music and free popcorn, and Base Borden Community Council was on site offering free barbecue hot dogs. The Military Police were also selling hot chocolate to raise money for the MP Fund for Blind Children.

This year the Spooky Sprint was a free event open to military members and their families and the surrounding communities. In lieu of registration fees, participants were asked to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Angus Food Bank.

A huge thank you goes out to the sponsors who made the event possible: presenting sponsor BMO, Lindt, and Base Borden’s dental office who donated 100 toothbrushes.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Spooky Sprint without a few prizes!

First place for the family costume contest went to the Corneau family, dressed as the Lion King characters.
The Vorano Family took second place as the Addams Family.

Guillaume Charbonneau won best individual costume.
