The silence of the scorching hot morning of 13 July 2018 at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden was broken by the peculiar growl of “Christine”, a white 1955 Dodge truck with incredible historical significance within the Corps of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (RCEME), which trundled unevenly but proudly across the Sicily parade square. Staff and students of the RCEME School assembled to bid a fond farewell to the outgoing School Command Team of Lieutenant Colonel (LCol) Jeff Spitzig and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Jeffrey Saunders, and provide a warm welcome to the incoming Commandant, LCol Yves Raymond and School Regimental Sergeant-Major, CWO Eric Drouin.
During their tenure, LCol Spitzig and CWO Saunders led the RCEME School through several important transformations including the move to a cutting edge schoolhouse, the dedication of the new building in the honour of Col Ritchie, and improvements to both the employment and training of the Army’s greatest technicians. LCol Spitzig will continue to provide leadership within the Corps while working with Director General Land Equipment Program, and CWO Saunders has been appointed the RCEME Corps Sergeant-Major.
While those assembled on parade waited eagerly to hear the parting words of wisdom of their leaders and to catch a glimpse of the incoming Command Team, the RCEME Colonel Commandant Brigadier General (retired) Brewer, the Corps Director Colonel Corriveau and the Corps Sergeant-Major Chief Warrant Officer Walhin were transported to the parade square on significant vehicles. These included a M38 Reviewing Jeep, a Bison Mobile Repair Team vehicle and the prized “Christine”. Accompanied by CWO Hamilton the Combat Training Centre (CTC) Commander and Reviewing Officer, Colonel Errington, expressed the following to the outgoing Command Team:
“Command Teams set the culture, pace, and priorities but the work is on the strength and the work ethic of the people. It would be easy for me to stand up here and talk about the big items like course success, but I want to thank you for the small things that you think go unnoticed: your extra time with the people and their concerns, your caring leadership and mentorship that will be felt by those individuals, their families, and the soldiers they lead in the future.”
Staff of the RCEME School were recognized on parade for their outstanding achievements. The Canadian Forces Decoration was awarded to Captain (Capt) McBride, Master Corporal (MCpl) Boucher, MCpl Chaisson, MCpl Cooling, MCpl Lampron, MCpl Picard-Gagne, and MCpl Pinard. The CTC Commander’s Commendation was awarded to Capt Goulet. Coins from the Director of the RCEME Corps were presented to Maj VanVolkenburg, Maj Duque, and Warrant Officer Gagnon.
The staff and students of the RCEME School wish the very best to LCol Spitzig and CWO Saunders as they depart for Ottawa, and proudly welcome the new Command Team of LCol Raymond and CWO Drouin. Arte et Marte.
Le 13 juillet 2018, le silence de ce matin caniculaire à la BFC Borden a été rompu par le grognement caractéristique de « Christine », un camion Dodge blanc de 1955 ayant une signification historique incroyable au sein du Corps du génie électrique et mécanique royal canadien (GEMRC), qui a lentement et inégalement traversé avec fierté le terrain de parade Sicile. Le personnel et les stagiaires de l’école du GEMRC se sont réunis pour dire au revoir à l’équipe de commandement de l’école, le lieutenant-colonel (Lcol) Jeff Spitzig et l’adjudant-chef (Adjuc) Jeffrey Saunders, et accueillir chaleureusement le nouveau commandant, le Lcol Yves Raymond et le sergent-major régimentaire de l’école, l’Adjuc Eric Drouin.
Au cours de leur mandat, le Lcol Spitzig et l’Adjuc Saunders ont dirigé l’école du GEMRC durant plusieurs transformations importantes, y compris le déménagement dans un nouvel établissement de pointe, l’inauguration du nouvel édifice en l’honneur du colonel (Col) Ritchie et l’amélioration de l’emploi et de l’instruction des meilleurs techniciens de l’Armée. Le Lcol Spitzig continuera d’assurer un leadership au sein du Corps en travaillant avec le Directeur général – Programme d’équipement terrestre, et l’Adjuc Saunders a été nommé sergent-major du Corps du GEMRC.
Pendant que ceux qui étaient rassemblés pour le défilé attendaient avec impatience d’entendre les sages paroles de leurs leaders et d’apercevoir la nouvelle équipe de commandement, le colonel commandant du GEMRC, le brigadier-général (retraité) Brewer, le directeur du Corps, le Col Corriveau et le sergent major du Corps, l’Adjuc Walhin, ont été transportés sur le terrain de parade à bord de véhicules d’importance : un Jeep de revue M38, un véhicule Bison de l’équipe mobile de réparation et la très prisée « Christine ». Accompagné de l’Adjuc Hamilton, le commandant du Centre d’instruction au combat (CIC) et officier examinateur, le Col Errington, s’est adressé à l’équipe de commandement sortante :
« Les équipes de commandement établissent la culture, le rythme et les priorités, mais le travail repose sur la force et l’éthique de travail des gens. Il serait facile pour moi de prendre la parole ici et de parler de grands sujets comme le succès des cours, mais je tiens à vous remercier pour les petites choses qui, selon vous, passent inaperçues : votre temps additionnel consacré aux gens et à leurs préoccupations, votre leadership et votre mentorat bienveillants qui seront ressentis par ces personnes, leurs familles et les soldats qu’ils dirigeront à l’avenir. »
Le personnel de l’école du GEMRC a été reconnu lors du défilé pour ses réalisations exceptionnelles. La Décoration des Forces canadiennes a été décernée au capitaine (Capt) McBride, au caporal-chef (Cplc) Boucher, au Cplc Chiasson, au Cplc Cooling, au Cplc Lampron, au Cplc Picard-Gagné et au Cplc Pinard. La Mention élogieuse du commandant du CIC a été décernée au Capt Goulet. Les pièces du directeur du Corps du GEMRC ont été présentées au Major (Maj) VanVolkenburg, au Maj Duque et à l’adjudant (Adj) Gagnon.
Le personnel et les stagiaires de l’école du GEMRC souhaitent la meilleure des chances au Lcol Spitzig et à l’Adjuc Saunders alors qu’ils partent pour Ottawa et accueillent fièrement la nouvelle équipe de commandement du Lcol Raymond et de l’Adjuc Drouin. Arte et Marte.
