On a cool but sunny Monday morning in May, students and staff at Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE) were hard at work. The goal is to get both the pedestal-mounted Canadair CF-86 “Sabre” and Canadair CT-133 “Silver Star” in front of the School, refurbished in time for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Cairn Rededication Ceremony on Saturday, June 3. Colonel Andrew S. Fleming, 16 Wing Commander, and Chief Warrant Officer Necole E. Belanger, 16 Wing Chief Warrant Officer, visited the team to congratulate them on the hard work and to review the progress being made.
Canadian military aviation began in 1917 with the inauguration of the Royal Flying Corps Canada. Evolving over the next few years, it became what we know today as the Royal Canadian Air Force by 1924. The RCAF Cairn, which stands across from CFSATE, was originally dedicated on November 11, 1951 to commemorate the men and women who have served Canada’s military aviation efforts since 1917. Though there have been multiple rededications in its lifetime, the plaques of the original monument have been preserved and remounted. Members of CFSATE have been working hard on this project since the beginning of March of this year.
A Cairn Rededication Ceremony and parade will be held on the morning of Saturday, June 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Following the ceremony, 16 Wing will be hosting an Open House until 3:00 p.m. with an array of activities for public attendance. The Open House will include static vintage aircraft displays along with featured events such as a reception, vendors, and a musical performance by “Jet Stream”, a fantastic ensemble from the Royal Canadian Air Force that will have your toes tapping. Par un lundi matin frais, mais ensoleillé de mai, des stagiaires et des membres de l’École de technologie et du génie aérospatial des Forces canadiennes (ETGAFC) travaillaient d’arrache-pied. L’objectif était de remettre à neuf le CF86 « Sabre » et le CT133 « Silver Star » de Canadair, montés sur socle en face de l’ETGAFC, à temps pour la cérémonie d’inauguration du monument de l’Aviation royale canadienne (ARC) du samedi 3 juin. Le colonel Andrew S. Fleming, commandant de la 16e Escadre, et l’adjudant-chef Necole E. Belanger, adjudant-chef de la 16e Escadre, ont visité le site de remise à neuf pour féliciter l’équipe de son travail acharné et examiner les progrès réalisés.
L’aviation militaire canadienne a commencé en 1917 lors de l’inauguration du Royal Flying Corps Canada. Elle a changé au cours des années et finalement, est devenue l’Aviation royale canadienne actuelle en 1924.
Le monument de l’ARC, qui se situe en face de l’ETGAFC, avait été inauguré à l’origine le 11 novembre 1951 pour commémorer les hommes et les femmes qui ont servi l’aviation militaire du Canada depuis 1917. Il a été inauguré de nombreuses fois, même si des plaques du monument d’origine ont été conservées et installées sur le nouveau monument. Des membres de l’ETGAFC travaillent fort depuis le début du mois de mars 2017 pour remettre à neuf le site et le monument.
Le monument sera révélé au public à l’occasion de la cérémonie et du défilé d’inauguration du monument qui auront lieu le samedi 3 juin, de 10 h à 12 h. Après la cérémonie, la 16e Escadre sera l’hôte d’une journée portes ouvertes de 12 h à 15 h au cours de laquelle elle offrira un éventail d’activités. Il y aura une exposition d’aéronefs d’époque, une réception, des commerçants, un concert de Jet Stream une belle prestation d’une musique remarquable de l’Aviation royale canadienne.
