Stronger Together, Nottawasaga Pines High School, Sept. 26 from 6–9 p.m. – Grade 6 through high school (all families welcome). There will be a BBQ dinner and amazing door prizes including an iPad!
Serving the communities of New Tecumseth, Adjala – Tosorontio and Essa Townships the 2nd annual ‘Stronger Together’ event for youth and families will be hosted by Nottawasaga OPP and social service agencies on Thursday, September 26.
Our community is among the best places for youth to grow up and become successful adults. However, being a young person today is not always easy. Many young people need help to grow up healthy, happy, safe and engaged. This partnership and engagement event can translate to more supportive and open discussions when resources are requested, or when connecting families with services in the community.
Youth are not always getting the support they need:
- One in five youth in Canada struggles with mental health challenges and 70 per cent of mental health issues begin in childhood and adolescence
- Youth people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental health and or substance use issues than any other age group
- Approximately 90 per cent of youth who die by suicide have mental health issues at the time of their death
Despite this clear need to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing, only one in six children and youth with mental health challenges are able to access the services they need. Early intervention is critical and appropriate supports should be put in place as soon as possible. By continuing “Stronger Together” we are creating connections necessary to engage young people in shaping relevant and responsive interventions when and where they need them.
These partnerships with families are key to supporting the best outcomes for youth in the areas of socialemotional, physical and mental well-being.When youth and families and their local community are connected they are more able to meet their basic needs and achieve their goals. They are also better able to overcome obstacles such as mental health, unsafe neighborhoods, family violence, and homelessness in order to reach these goals.
Stronger Together Youth Symposium will showcase top dynamic speakers and focus on the concerns identified in our communities; wellness, mental health, youth resiliency and social media safety. In addition, there will be opportunity to learn and connect with many local social services that will be set up to providing information such as: CMHA, New Path, Krassmen Centre, Simcoe Muskoka District Health, YSSN, CONTACT Community Services, Dental Health and many more.
To ensure all areas of our community will be able to attend the event, buses will be provided from Tottenham and Alliston transporting people to Nottawasaga Pines High School in Angus.
