Second World War veteran Will Dwyer has been walking over the past 39 years to raise a staggering $1 million for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Early Saturday morning, 24 August, Will Dwyer, along with 22 CFB Borden firefighters in full gear and breathing apparatus, along with other local firefighters, CFB Borden Honorary Colonel, Jennifer Armstrong-Lehman, Barrie Mayor, Jeff Lehman and many other participants left the CFB Borden Legacy Park on a 20 kilometre trek to the Barrie Cenotaph all to help and support Will Dwyer realize his dream of raising $1 million towards cancer research.
94-year-old Dwyer has been leading and organizing the “We WILL Walk” for the past 39 years – at the beginning of the walk this past weekend his fundraising quest had raised over $930,000. The event tally has yet to be finalized, but, according to the Terry Fox website, Dwyer sits at $937,813 – inching closer and closer to his goal.
Dwyer’s son, Robert Dwyer serves with the CFB Borden Fire Department and has been integral in helping his father realize his goal, and in organizing this monumental event. Until this last event, Will Dwyer has been raising funds on his own, but due to health issues, his son has come on board to help his Father get to a million.
While serving in the Second World War, Will Dwyer lost his mother, age 51 to cancer. And, two years ago, Dwyer himself was diagnosed with cancer. He is determined, however, to see his fundraising mission to the end and plans on taking part in the upcoming Barrie Terry Fox run/walk in some way.
Dwyer is no stranger to CFB Borden and has hosted a number of fundraising events over the years in his nearly four-decade-long quest.
Dwyer has no intention of slowing down, stating that if the $1 million goal is reached prior to the Terry Fox events locally then, “I’ll try for the second million next year!”

Tôt samedi matin, le 24 août, Will Dwyer accompagné de 22 pompiers de la BFC Borden portant tout leur équipement et leur appareil respiratoire ainsi que d’autres pompiers du service local, du colonel honoraire de la BFC Borden, Jennifer Armstrong-Lehman, du maire de Barrie, Jeff Lehman, et de nombreux autres participants ont pris le départ au parc Legacy de la BFC Borden pour suivre un parcours de 20 kilomètres les menant au Monument commémoratif de Barrie; tous ces gens souhaitaient aider et appuyer Will Dwyer afin qu’il réalise son rêve : amasser 1 million de dollars pour la recherche contre le cancer.
Monsieur Dwyer, qui a 94 ans, dirige et organise l’événement « We WILL Walk » depuis 39 ans; avant même que ne débute la marche de ce week-end, il avait amassé plus de 930 000 $. Le décompte final des sommes amassées par son événement n’a pas encore été fait; toutefois, selon le site Web de La Fondation Terry Fox, monsieur Dwyer aurait amassé 937 813 $. Il se rapproche donc de plus en plus de son objectif.
Le fils de monsieur Dwyer, Robert, est membre du service d’incendie de la BFC Borden; il a grandement aidé son père à atteindre son objectif et à organiser cet événement d’envergure. Jusqu’à cette année, Will Dwyer recueillait des fonds par lui-même, mais, en raison de problèmes de santé, son fils est venu lui donner un coup de main pour qu’il puisse franchir la barre du million de dollars.
Pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, alors qu’il était en service, Will Dwyer a perdu sa mère des suites d’un cancer à l’âge de 51 ans. Il y a deux ans, c’est monsieur Dwyer qui a reçu un diagnostic de cancer. Il est toutefois déterminé à mener à bien sa mission de collecte de fonds et prévoit prendre part, d’une manière ou d’une autre, à la course/marche Terry Fox qui se tiendra à Barrie.
La BFC Borden n’est pas étrangère à monsieur Dwyer, qui y a tenu un certain nombre d’activités de collecte de fonds tout au long de son aventure qui dure depuis presque quatre décennies.
Monsieur Dwyer n’a pas l’intention de ralentir ses ardeurs; il a déclaré que, si l’objectif de 1 million de dollars est atteint avant la tenue des activités locales de La Fondation Terry Fox, il essaierait d’amasser un deuxième million l’an prochain!
