Col J.P.P. Godbout, 16 Wing Commander, presided over a Wing Honorary Colonel Investiture ceremony on Friday, Oct 12 at the Vice-Regal Room of the Officer’s Mess, Base Borden.
Honorary Colonels are integral members of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) family. They may be former RCAF officers or distinguished Canadian citizens hailing from a diverse range of backgrounds, including many well-known public and community figures.
On this day, 16 Wing recognized Honorary Colonel (HCol) emeritus, Bill Coyle for his unwavering service and essential contributions to 16 Wing. All 78 guests, including CFB Borden Commander, Col Atherton and CFB Borden CWO, CWO Charette, were seated.
Col Godbout opened the ceremony praising HCol Bill Coyle stating, “I would be remiss if I did not re-iterate our deepest thanks to you for your contribution to military and civilian aviation, and your willingness to share your experience and sage advice with the Wing.”
HCol Coyle dedicated 17 years as HCol to both the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE) and then 16 Wing.
After the formal signing of investiture documents, Col Godbout welcomed HCol Van Kessel saying, “Over the years, Honorary Colonels have been appointed for the prominence they hold in the community, but more importantly as a mark of esteem. Renee, you are joining a select group of distinguished Canadians from all spectrums of society.”
HCol Van Kessel addressed those in attendance remarking that it is an especially significant and humbling privilege to be offered the opportunity to become the next 16 Wing Honorary Colonel. HCol Van Kessel expressed her gratitude to those who have support her career and this nomination and she was looking forward to working with the Wing in the future.
The ceremony was followed by an informal social gathering at the Mess.

Godbout, commandant de la 16e Escadre, a présidé une cérémonie d’investiture du colonel honoraire de l’escadre, le vendredi 12 octobre 2018, dans la salle vice-royale du mess des officiers de la base Borden. Les colonels honoraires font partie intégrante de la grande famille de l’Aviation royale canadienne (ARC). Ils peuvent être d’anciens officiers de l’ARC ou des citoyens canadiens qui sont issus des horizons les plus divers et qui se sont distingués, y compris des personnalités bien connues du public et de la collectivité.
Durant cette cérémonie, la 16e Escadre a reconnu le colonel honoraire (Colh) émérite Bill Coyle pour son service exemplaire et sa contribution essentielle à la 16e Escadre devant 78 invités, notamment le commandant de la base, le Col Atherton, et l’adjudant-chef de la base, l’Adjuc Charette. Le Col Godbout a ouvert la cérémonie en louant le Colh Bill Coyle et en déclarant qu’il manquerait à son devoir s’il ne le remerciait pas de nouveau de sa contribution à l’aviation militaire et civile et de sa volonté de faire part de son expérience et de ses sages conseils à l’Escadre. Le Colh Coyle a consacré 17 ans en tant que colonel honoraire à l’École de technologie et du génie aérospatial des Forces canadiennes (ETGAFC) et à la 16e Escadre.
Après la signature officielle des documents d’investiture, le commandant a souhaité la bienvenue au Colh Van Kessel en déclarant ce qui suit : « Au fil des ans, les colonels honoraires sont nommés en raison de leur importance dans la collectivité, mais ces nominations représentent surtout une marque d’estime. Renee, vous faites maintenant partie d’un groupe de Canadiens distingués provenant de tous les secteurs de la société. » Le Colh Van Kessel s’est adressée aux personnes présentes en soulignant que le fait de devenir le prochain colonel honoraire de la 16e Escadre représente un « privilège particulièrement important et émouvant ». Elle a exprimé sa gratitude à ceux qui appuient sa carrière et sa nomination et a dit qu’elle se réjouissait à la perspective de travailler avec l’Escadre. La cérémonie a été suivie d’une activité sociale informelle au mess.
