In an emotional Depart with Dignity (DWD) ceremony on Wed., Nov. 28, hundreds of co-workers, military representatives and family members came out to recognize, remember and pay tribute to Mcpl Earl Graham who is retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) after serving for 42 years.
Numerous presentations and speeches were made, including a letter from the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, a Commanders Coin presented by the CFB Borden Chief Warrant Officer, CWO Charette on behalf of the CFB Borden Commander, Col Atherton and a Shadow Box with a flag that was flown at the cook’s school, which MCpl Graham was able to lower with an Honour Guard composed of Senior NCM’s who saluted the flag as he lowered it – only a small taste of the accolades that Mcpl Graham received during the ceremony.
Below is a short bio of Mcpl Graham’s illustrious career with the CAF:
Mcpl Graham began his career as a MSE OP with the 21st Winsor Service Battalion in June of 1975. He transferred over to the Regular Force as a cook, and began his QL3 training at CFSAL, CFB Borden on March 17, 1982. He proceeded to CFB Petawawa, Ontario and was posted to 2 SVC BN. During his time in Petawawa he completed many field exercises, completed his QL5 cook course in May, 1985, and a UN deployment to Cyprus in Sept 1986 – March 1987. Earl was posted to Baden, Germany in 1988, he returned to Canada from Germany with a wife and 2 children and was posted to CFB Cold Lake in 1992. While posted to Cold Lake, he went on deployment to Croatia in 1994. Mcpl Graham was then posted back to CFB Petawawa in 1996. While posted in Petawawa, he completed deployments to Bosnia, 1998, Kosovo 1999-2000 and again to Bosnia Sept 2003 – Apr 2004. Mcpl Graham was posted to CFB Edmonton, where he spent 7 years with 3 PPCLI. While posted in Edmonton, Mcpl Graham completed 2 deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan from Apr 2008 – Aug 2008 and again Sept 2009 – May 2010. Mcpl Graham’s final posting was to CFB Borden as IC shift and IC production in the various base kitchens.
Mcpl Graham will be retiring in Barrie, ON with his wife, Elke. He is excited to spend quality time with his 3 children Jessica, Alex and Charly and his 5 grandchildren. Mcpl Graham plans to continue volunteering his time with the Salvation Army using his skills as a cook to help feed people in need.

Lors d’une cérémonie de Départ dans la dignité, le mercredi 28 novembre, des centaines de collègues, de représentants militaires et de membres de la famille sont venus saluer le Cplc Earl Graham et lui rendre hommage à l’occasion de son départ à la retraite, après 42 ans au service des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC).
Au fil des nombreux témoignages et discours prononcés, le Cplc Graham a reçu diverses marques de reconnaissance, dont une lettre du premier ministre du Canada, Justin Trudeau, un médaillon du commandant remis par le cadet adjudant-chef de la BFC Borden, l’Adjuc Charette, au nom du commandant de la BFC Borden, le Col Atherton, ainsi qu’un cadre et un drapeau exposé à l’école Cook. Le Cplc Graham a pu abaisser ce drapeau tandis qu’une garde d’honneur composée de militaires du rang le saluait.
Voici une courte biographie de la brillante carrière du Cplc Graham au sein des FAC :
Le Cplc Graham a débuté sa carrière en tant que conducteur de matériel mobile de soutien au sein du 21e Bataillon de service de Windsor en juin 1975. Il a été transféré vers la Force régulière à titre de cuisinier, puis a commencé sa formation NQ3 à l’École d’administration et de logistique des Forces canadiennes, BFC Borden, le 17 mars 1982. Il a ensuite rejoint la BFC Petawawa (Ontario), où il a été affecté au 2e Bataillon de service. Durant son service à Petawawa, il a effectué de nombreux exercices sur le terrain, a terminé son cours de cuisinier NQ5 en mai 1985 et a participé à un déploiement des Nations Unies à Chypre de septembre 1986 à mars 1987. Le Cplc Graham a été affecté à Baden, en Allemagne, en 1988, ou il s’est marié et a eu deux enfants avant de revenir au Canada à la BFC Cold Lake en 1992. Durant son affectation à Cold Lake, il a participé à un déploiement en Croatie en 1994. Le Cplc Graham a ensuite été affecté à la BFC Petawawa en 1996. Durant cette période, il a effectué des déploiements en Bosnie (1998), au Kosovo (1999-2000), puis de nouveau en Bosnie (septembre 2003 à avril 2004). Le Cplc Graham a ensuite été affecté à la BFC Edmonton, où il a passé sept ans au sein du 3 PPCLI. Pendant cette période, il a effectué deux déploiements à Kandahar, en Afghanistan; le premier d’avril à août 2008, puis le second de septembre 2009 à mai 2010. Sa dernière affectation s’est déroulée à la BFC Borden où il a occupé le poste de responsable de quart et de responsable de production dans les différentes cuisines de la base.
Le Cplc Graham prendra sa retraite à Barrie, en Ontario, en compagnie de son épouse, Elke. Il est impatient de pouvoir profiter pleinement de la compagnie de ses trois enfants, Jessica, Alex et Charly, et de ses cinq petits-enfants. Il a également l’intention de poursuivre ses activités bénévoles au sein de l’Armée du Salut où il contribue à nourrir des gens dans le besoin grâce à ses compétences de cuisinier.
