Warm air and clear skies welcomed guests to an outdoor concert at CFB Borden on 17 June performed by Borden’s Volunteer Brass and Reed (BB&R) Band.
The evening was bittersweet for the band as the current bandmaster, MWO François Métivier will be departing Borden this summer after close to five years at the helm of the BB&R Band.
CPO 2 Benjamin Van Slyke will be arriving from Victoria to Borden to take the reins this September.
The band took time to pay a special tribute to MWO Métivier who will be taking on the role of Sgt-Major of the Royal 22e Regiment Band at CFB Valcartier.
Sentimental words, messages of thanks and laughs were shared, including some specially selected pieces (which were deliberately chosen from the bandmaster’s “refuse to play” list), were performed just for him as he looked on both cringing and laughing at the same time.
In addition to this fond farewell, two members were celebrating 25 years of playing and contributing countless hours to the band. Colin Lloyd and Sue Lake joined in 1994 – the year the band was formed (as a club) – both were recognized for their time and dedication to the volunteer band.
The BB&R Band was formed as a club in 1994. When an official regular force conductor was appointed, the band was recognized as an official regular force band in 1998.
The crowd was treated to numerous pieces, all of which were introduced by MWO Métivier, who made a point to educate the audience about each piece they were about to hear.
The BB&R Band is composed of both military and civilian players with experience ranging from novice to advanced.

Le 17 juin, un temps chaud et un ciel dégagé ont accueilli les invités à un concert extérieur de l’Harmonie volontaire de Borden à la BFC Borden.
La soirée était d’une amère douceur pour les membres de l’Harmonie, car le chef d’orchestre actuel, l’Adjum François Métivier, quittera Borden cet été, après avoir dirigé l’Harmonie pendant près de cinq ans.
En septembre prochain, le PM 2 Benjamin Van Slyke quittera Victoria pour se rendre à la BFC Borden afin de prendre la relève.
L’Harmonie a pris le temps de rendre particulièrement hommage à l’Adjum Métivier, qui prendra en charge le rôle de sergent-major de la Musique du Royal 22e Régiment à la BFC Valcartier. Des paroles sentimentales, des messages de remerciement et des rires ont été échangés. L’Harmonie a également joué pour lui quelques pièces spécialement choisies, tirées intentionnellement de la liste de pièces que le chef d’orchestre « refusait de jouer ». En les écoutant, il ne pouvait s’empêcher de rire tout en grinçant des dents.
En plus de cet adieu chaleureux, deux membres de l’Harmonie célébraient 25 ans de musique, ayant contribué d’innombrables heures à l’harmonie volontaire. Colin Lloyd et Sue Lake se sont joints à l’harmonie en 1994 – l’année de sa formation (en tant que club); les deux ont été reconnus pour leur temps et leur dévouement pour l’Harmonie.

L’Harmonie est composée de musiciens militaires et civils ayant divers niveaux d’expérience, de débutant à avancé.
