The upcoming Barrie Air Show is set for a weekend of fun programming and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy
Kicking off the month of May, representatives of the city of Barrie, Simcoe County and CFB Borden joined together in downtown Barrie, Ont. to announce the details of this years upcoming 100th Anniversary Centennial Barrie Air Show, sponsored by Pratt Homes.
Announced by the mayor of Barrie, Alex Nuttall at the Sandbox Centre event space, the Barrie Air Show is set for 14 – 16 June with performances from the CF Snowbirds, CF-18 Demonstration Team, the CAF Parachute Team Skyhawks and a CH-126 Griffon Helicopter Demonstration. More additions will be announced within the coming weeks.
“Being able to partner with Base Borden is an incredible honour for the city of Barrie,” Mayor Nuttall said. “The economic impact of these major events is incredible for our community, for our hotels and restaurants, but certainly showcasing the best we have to offer in terms of our waterfront and the best we have to offer in terms of our citizens; those who serve in the CAF.
Alongside the Air Show as the main event, Mayor Nuttall also unveiled the plethora of fun activities planned for residents and attendees including live music and free movie screenings.
“We’ll kick off the weekend at Meridian Place with [Canadian band] Daniel Romano’s Outfit, followed by our incredible drone show that’s going to take place over Kempenfelt Bay,” Mayor Nuttall said. “Fun programming will be taking place throughout the weekend with Downtown Barrie’s Open-Air Dunlop, CFB Borden’s Kiddie Commando course and static displays, live music in Meridian Place and three outdoor screenings of Memphis Belle at Meridian Place.”
With last years event drawing in tens of thousands of residents and visitors, Pratt Homes’ addition of the drone show is said to share the full history of the RCAF in a gorgeous display over Barrie’s waterfront.
CFB Borden Base Commander, Colonel Jonathan Michaud expressed his excitement in partnering with local communities to celebrate the RCAF’s Centennial
“I am proud to be standing here alongside the city of Barrie and its partners and supporters to announce and kick off the Barrie Air Show this summer,” Col Michaud said. “CFB Borden is excited to be part of this occasion and to provide support for this great event that helps recognize our CAF and its personnel.”
The Barrie Air Show aims to not only entertain the public and demonstrate the skill of the RCAF’s aviators, but it provides CAF members an opportunity to be recognized by fellow Canadians.
“Today serves as a clear reminder that our defense team members and their families are surrounded and part of communities where they’re respected, included and welcome,” Col Michaud explained. “Communities which provide diverse opportunities and where our personnel are embraced by our fellow Canadians who support them.”
