It was a rowdy good time at Pine River Elementary School in Angus, as they held an assembly to both receive a cheque from Tim Hortons, Angus, as well as celebrate a goal the students achieved to support the Terry Fox Foundation.
On Friday, November 2, Jenny Kovats and Chris Naylor, Owner/Operators of Tim Hortons in Angus made their way to Pine River Elementary School to present the students and teachers with a cheque for $7,892.
Every year, Tim Hortons restaurants raise funds to support local initiatives, and this year Pine River, along with Operation HOHOHO, a CFB Borden, 400 Squadron fundraising campaign were the selected recipients.
Lorna Howlett-Lowe, Principal, Pine River Elementary, explained how the funds would be used to enrich the lives of the students at the school, and emphasized the great appreciation for the community support of both Tim Hortons and community members who purchased cookies to support the Smile Cookie Campaign.
“The Smile Cookie Funds are going towards our yard development,” Howlett-Lowe commented. “We have submitted plans to create an outdoor classroom for our yard and a type of circuit around our yard with accessible limestone materials. We have purchased various active equipment such as various balls, chalk and bubbles for the yard. We have grade 5 and 6 students called ‘Playground Pals’ sharing cooperative games in the yard. Money has gone to purchasing vests so our primary students can identify the Playground Pals.”
Along with the Smile Cookie presentation, the school was celebrating the achievement of raising a minimum of $500 towards the Terry Fox Foundation during the 2018 Terry Fox Run campaign in September. As an incentive, if the goal was achieved, students would have the opportunity to “decorate” staff with Whipped Cream – needless to say, students thoroughly enjoyed their reward!
