On Saturday 27 May, the Base Borden Rod and Gun Club hosted the Kids Fishing Derby at the Catawampus Pond. This was the first time since the pandemic that the event was hosted, so the excitement was running high.
The derby was run by the Borden Rod and Gun Club Volunteers who were happy to take part again after a lengthy hiatus. The pond was stocked with plenty of fish for the kids to catch, including rainbow, brown, and speckled trout.
For each of the competition’s three age categories, winners received brand-new fishing gear. Serenity won the 4 to 7 years category with a 1 lb 2 oz fish. The biggest fish of the day was caught by Ara Chung in the 8 to 11 years category with a 1 lb 12 oz fish. Finally, Malachi Cajanding won the 11 to 18 years category with a 1 lb 7 oz fish.
Goody bags were also given to all children in attendance, so no child left empty-handed. Parents were not left out either, as hotdogs and beverages were provided free of charge for everyone.
The derby was overall a great success as everyone had a blast trying to catch the biggest fish. Athena, one of the many kids in attendance, was very excited when she caught a fish, even though she wasn’t one of the winners of the competition. It wasn’t long after that her brother, Aiden, caught a fish as well, as if not to be outdone.
Fishing Director and coordinator of the Kids Fishing Derby Bill Rittershofer said “I’d like to thank my fellow directors from the [Base Borden Rod and Gun Club] Executive, the members of the club who volunteered, the Juno Beach mess staff, and all of the families that participated in this year’s Family Fishing Derby. Without your support this event would never have been as fun and successful”.
The Rod and Gun Club has many other fun family activities planned so make sure to keep an eye out on their website.
