I will be retiring soon and have been doing some reflecting on my career in the military.
I was fortunate to have served in Wainwright, Winnipeg, Outcan(UK), and ending my career here in Borden. I am a “glass half full” kind of person, so let me give you my thoughts on some of the best spiritual gifts from the CAF.
1. The military will teach you how to fail.
I realize that may sound like an odd thing to celebrate, but if you have never failed in life (many military members are alphas who are perfectionists), then you have no idea how to pick yourself up off the ground and how to maintain hope in challenging circumstances. Guaranteed you will fail at something in this environment: a course, a PT test, a work challenge, etc. This is a different world, and there are so many new things to learn on a daily basis. Give yourself some grace and know that a failure is not the end of the world, but the chance to learn something new about yourself.
2. The military will introduce you to a new family.
You will make friends here for life, as you will have forged all kinds of challenges together. Love is something that multiplies and does not divide, so the more people who love you and are in your corner, the better life will become.
3. You will see the world from different angles.
I have been in Stavanger, Vilnius, Tartu and all kinds of other unique spots in the world that I never would have experienced in a civilian position. Your travels will broaden your worldview and heighten your appreciation of difference and diversity.
4. Finally, the military will make you even prouder of your country.
Wearing that flag everyday heightens your understanding of the sacrifices of the past, and it will embed itself in your heart.
Words like mission, sacrifice, commitment, duty, and honour will be a part of your life forevermore, because of your choice to serve. Blessings to all of you for your ongoing commitment to Canada and to Canadians.
