After two long years, CFB Borden welcomed the public back to their annual Remembrance Day ceremony on the base.
A large crowd of community members joined together with serving military members and their families, veterans, cadets, and civilian employees of the Canadian Armed Forces to commemorate those who have sacrificed in service to our country and our freedom.
The ceremony was held at Legacy Park at the Angus gate of Base Borden on the morning of 11 November. Well before the ceremony began the bleachers were full and a sizeable crowd had gathered on the grassy area surrounding the monument, which honours the two million sons and daughters who have trained at Base Borden, and all who continue to train there year after year. The monument houses an urn with soil from Vimy Ridge, and a bugler positioned to call to the twin statue that stands in the city of Arras, France where the battle of Vimy Ridge took place.
Canadian soldiers who are currently serving or have served were remembered alongside those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and the families who have lost loved ones in service to their country. The ceremony also took a moment to remember areas around the world still at war, particularly in the Ukraine.
Two minutes of silence began and ended with the sound of a cannon blast that could be heard across the community. After the ceremony concluded, a moving round of applause broke out among the crowd and it was nearly half an hour before all those waiting in line had a chance to place their poppies on the wreaths that had been laid.
