Welcome to January, and the New Year, 2024! After a long and hopefully restful holiday season, January is here and with it comes the crispness of winter, and the joy of knowing the days are getting longer instead of shorter. January has a lot to offer, it marks new beginnings and sentiments that can remind us to hope for fresh starts, and good things on the horizon. Yet in all the hope that comes with new beginnings, sometimes there can be challenges that are somewhat tough and unexpected, or even a little bit messy.
Over the last few weeks, I was overjoyed to meet a new friend; a lovely dog who was as delightful as she was furry. I was so excited to pet her and talk to her that I hardly noticed her white hair accumulating all over my black uniform. Before I knew it, I looked like I had rolled around in white fur, it was a little messy but nothing a lint roller couldn’t fix. Sometimes that’s what it’s like with new beginnings. We see an opportunity to meet and connect with someone or something new, but eventually realize that we may be in a situation that’s a little messy. That’s ok, sometimes life is messy!
So, what do we do when we find ourselves in a place that seems a little bit unexpected, or a little bit challenging?
- Be a helpful helper – figure out what you have the capacity to do and what would be meaningful in the situation, try not to do more than is needed or more than you are able.
- Don’t go it alone – if you are trying to help another person make sure you have someone trusted that you can talk to, or a way to care for yourself as you are helping.
- Know when to involve someone else – sometimes as we help it becomes apparent that more help is needed. Don’t be afraid to reach out for assistance from helping organizations, or to recommend outside help to others.
All the best in 2024 as you walk into new beginnings!
