After 33 years of service to Canada, Lieutenant-General Christopher Coates has announced his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Lieutenant-General Coates joined the CAF after completing his post-secondary education at the University of Calgary with majors in chemistry and biochemistry. Upon entering the CAF he was trained as a helicopter pilot. His flying career started as a reconnaissance pilot flying light observation helicopters with 444 Squadron in Lahr, Germany and 430 Squadron in Valcartier, Québec. He also flew utility helicopters with both 408 Squadron in Edmonton, Alberta and 427 Squadron in Petawawa, Ontario. He later became the Commanding Officer of 427 Sqn from 2004 to 2006 and the first CO of 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron when it was transferred to the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command on February 1, 2006.
In his staff appointments Lieutenant-General Coates has served as an operations officer with 10 Tactical Air Group HQ in St Hubert, 1 Wing HQ in Kingston, with the Air Staff in Ottawa and as the CAOC Director in Winnipeg. Lieutenant-General Coates served as the Deputy Commander Continental NORAD Region based at Tyndall AFB, Florida. In June 2013 he returned to Canada as Deputy Commander Continental at Canadian Joint Operations Command before returning to NORAD to serve as Director Operations and Deputy Commander at NORAD Headquarters in Colorado Springs. His last assignment with the CAF is Commander, Canadian Joint Operations Command.
Throughout his career he has contributed to the planning and execution of aviation support to a variety of international and domestic operations. Highlights include involvement with the air and aviation planning for Canadian missions to Haiti and Honduras, the first Canadian tactical aviation deployments to both Bosnia and Kosovo, air support for the French-led mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as being the first Commander of Joint Task Force-Afghanistan Air Wing.
Lieutenant-General Coates will now transfer to the Transition Group where he will begin the formal process of officially releasing from the CAF.
Effective March 22, 2021, Major-General William Seymour will assume the responsibilities of Acting Commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC). Major-General Seymour will assume this position until such time as Rear-Admiral J.R. Auchterlonie is promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and appointed Commander Canadian Joint Operations Command, as recently announced in the 2021 Canadian Armed Forces General and Flag Officer senior appointments, promotions, and retirements.

Le lieutenant‑général Christopher Coates a annoncé qu’après 33 ans de service pour le Canada, il prendrait sa retraite des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC).
Le lieutenant‑général Coates s’est enrôlé dans les FAC après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l’Université de Calgary avec des majeures en chimie et en biochimie. Il a également piloté divers hélicoptères utilitaires au sein du 408e Escadron à Edmonton (Alberta) et du 427e Escadron à Petawawa (Ontario). Par la suite, il est devenu commandant du 427e Escadron, poste qu’il a occupé de 2004 à 2006, puis il a été le premier commandant du 427e Escadron d’opérations spéciales d’aviation lorsque celui-ci a été transféré au Commandement des Forces d’opérations spéciales du Canada le 1er février 2006.
En ce qui concerne ses affectations à des postes d’état-major, le lieutenant‑général Coates a été officier des opérations au QG du 10e Groupement aérien tactique à St-Hubert, il a servi au QG de la 1re Escadre à Kingston et au sein de l’état-major de la Force aérienne à Ottawa, et il a été directeur du CMOA à Winnipeg. Le lieutenant‑général Coates a été commandant adjoint de la région continentale du NORAD à la base aérienne Tyndall, en Floride. En juin 2013, il est revenu au Canada pour occuper un poste de commandant adjoint des opérations continentales du Commandement des opérations interarmées du Canada avant de retourner au NORAD pour occuper les fonctions de directeur des opérations et de commandant adjoint au quartier général du NORAD à Colorado Springs. Sa dernière affectation au sein des FAC sera comme commandant du Commandement des opérations interarmées du Canada.
Tout au long de sa carrière, il a contribué à la planification et à l’exécution du soutien aérien pour diverses opérations au pays et à l’étranger. Parmi les faits marquants de sa carrière, on peut nommer sa participation à la planification aérienne et de l’aviation lors des missions canadiennes à Haïti et au Honduras, les premiers déploiements de l’aviation tactique canadienne en Bosnie et au Kosovo, le soutien aérien apporté à la mission française en République démocratique du Congo et son rôle de premier commandant de l’Escadre aérienne de la Force opérationnelle interarmées en Afghanistan.
Le lieutenant‑général Coates sera maintenant affecté au Groupe de transition, où il entamera le processus officiel de libération des FAC.
À compter du 22 mars 2021, le major‑général William Seymour assumera les fonctions de commandant par intérim du Commandement des opérations interarmées du Canada. Le major‑général Seymour occupera ce poste jusqu’à ce que le contre‑amiral J.R. Auchterlonie obtienne le grade de vice-amiral et soit nommé commandant du Commandement des opérations interarmées du Canada, comme cela a récemment été communiqué dans l’annonce des nominations, des promotions, et des départs à la retraite chez les généraux et les officiers généraux des Forces armées canadiennes de 2021.
