The community of Base Borden is a hidden gem of fun activities for not only the military and their families, but also the public. Listed below are six fun activities to try and get a taste of what Base Borden had to offer.
1. Visit the Base Borden Military Museum
The Base Borden Military Museum is packed full of Canadian history treasures. It’s one of Canada’s largest military museums. There are so many interesting exhibits, from fully restored military tanks to weapons. Even better, admission is free to the museum although donations are much appreciated. The museum hours of operation are from Monday to Friday from 0900 to 1500 hrs and from 1000 to 1600 hrs on Saturday and Sunday.
2. Go for a bike ride
Base Borden features a beautiful trail system fit for walking, running, or biking. The trails wind their way through the forest offering a great chance to enjoy nature with parking available at some trail entrances. The Trillium Trail is a 7.5 km paved trail but there are other dirt trails that are great for mountain biking or hiking. Feel free to bring your furry friends as long as they remain on a leash. There are also several rest stops along the Trillium Trail to take a break including trash cans. Be sure to bring water and snacks to refuel and rehydrate. 3. Check out the fitness center
The Buell Fitness and Aquatic Centre is an impressive facility. It features an Olympic size heated pool, an outdoor pool, a hot tub, squash courts, indoor/outdoor fields and courts, a running track, cardio machines and countless other fitness items available for use. Not to mention that the fitness center also contains a sports store in which they offer seasonal equipment such as kayaks, golf clubs and snowshoes. It’s a great way to stay healthy and have a fun day indoors or outdoors with family and friends. Single and family memberships are available for regular members, ordinary members, associate members, and the public.
4. Golf
The Borden Golf Club is often referred to as one of Simcoe’s best kept secrets. The course is 18 holes and offers a great experience. The course is very well maintained, and any golfer is bound to have a great time. After a hard day out on the green, you can enjoy a meal either indoors or on the patio, open year-round to the public.
5. Go bowling
Circle Pine Bowling Centre is a great place to go bowling with 12 lanes and five pin bowling. You can walk-in or reserve your lanes online. There is also a fully licensed canteen available. Casual bowling hours are Friday from 1700 hrs to 2000 hrs and on Saturday from 1500 hrs to 2000 hrs.
6. See a movie
The Terra Theatre is an excellent place to see a movie with an admission price of only eight dollars. In addition, it offers all your favorite movie snacks at a reasonable price.
