The Borden Family Resource Centre encourages everyone to wear teal on 27 April as a way to show military children that you see them, honour their contribution and celebrate their resilience.
In April 2021, two Shilo Military Family Resource Centre staff were looking for a new way to celebrate the Month of the Military Child in their community. During their research they discovered the “Purple Up” campaign which is a U.S. program wherein community members wear purple to celebrate and recognize the contribution children of military families make to the success of the military as a whole.
The Shilo staff thought it was important for Canadian military children to have their own acknowledgement colour and teal was chosen because it combines the colours of the three branches of the Canadian Armed Forces: blue for Air Force, green for Army and blue/white for the Navy.
Starting in April 2021, the Shilo MFRC initiated “Teal Up Day”, which invites community members to wear teal on a specific day during the Month of the Military Child to recognize Canadian military children. From there the idea has spread to Military Family Resource Centres across the country.
